"Sometime in the near future, possibly this winter, the ocean will deposit enough sand between Chatham's South Beach and Monomoy Island to connect the two. For the birds that nest on
Monomoy National Wildlife Refuge, that will be the end of the protection from predators they've enjoyed since Monomoy was separated from the mainland by a northeaster in 1958."
