Saw-whet Owl!

Sylvia Marek discovered this adorable Northern Saw-whet Owl at Crestwood Village early this morning. While walking down a street near her house, she heard a flock of scolding Black-capped Chickadees in a conifer and searched to see what they were so upset about ― and there it was!

I went to visit the owl during my lunch break. It wasn't in the best light and at ISO 200 I was only able to get 1/15th to 1/30th second shutter speeds, so I used my remote shutter release. Even then the shots came out somewhat grainy so I went a little heavy on noise reduction in Photoshop. Still, this was the best view of this species I've ever had!

  1. A Saw-Whet Owl yawning!! It does not get any cuter than that. Years ago I was lucky enough to see one in the UW Arboretrum a couple feet above me in the conifers just like this one. He just stared at me for about 10 min and then I said goodbye while he just sat there and watched me walk away. Thanks for these great photos.
